In legend, King Arthur is said to have founded Wessex after defeating the Saxons at the Battle of Badon Hill in the 6th century CE. Wessex had a long history of habitation prior to the arrival of Cerdic with evidence of continuous human activity going back to the Neolithic Age and increasing during the Bronze Age (c. 3000-c. 1200 BCE).
