The classic racing Bugatti, the 2-Litre 8-cylinder Type 35, was first produced in 1925 and dominated Grand Prix racing in the late twenties. In 1926 Bugatti developed a smaller-engined version, the Type 37, using the same chassis and body. This model was used successfully for smaller-capacity racing, and was very popular with amateur drivers.

The chassis remained that of the legendary Type 35, but the engine was replaced by a new one, rectangular and smooth-surfaced, like the in-line eight-cylinder of the Type 35.
